Locating the Transmission Alignment Mark on a MKIV Jetta
I recently replaced the timing belt and water pump on my Jetta, and followed this howto over on VWVortex to do it. However, i did not use the "mark and match" method the author used to line the belt up, but rather did it the way the Bentley manual describes by aligning the cam mark and transmission mark.
However, while I obviously knew where the transmission is, I couldn't for the life of me find the stupid alignment mark on it. The Bentley shows a diagram of it aligned, but gives no indication of where it is. (it's under some hoses.. easy to find once you know where).
Here's are some pictures showing where it is and what it looks like aligned.
The mark is on top of the transmission, visible when looking down at the top of the engine. It's to the lower right of the distributor. You'll likely have to shift some hoses around a bit to see it well.
